Posting Food Photos

I’ve heard it whispered in dark alleys and loud parties. Hell, people even say it to my face. You’re one of “those” people. Yup, I am. And damn proud of it. I Instagram pictures of food. Lots of them. And I even push those Instagrams to my Facebook and Twitter feeds with impudence.

I used to try and qualify it and get a pass because I am, after all, a food photographer. Isn’t that a good excuse? But, now that I think about it, why do I need an excuse? Why is taking pictures of food a lesser act than posting pictures of the city you just visited? Or the car you just gotta have? Guess what, I post pictures of food… and my dog (sin number two). Deal with it. Or don’t follow me.

Here’s a really funny spoof on the iPhone 5 and the Instagram-ish phase. It’s funny because it’s true. I can relate to this far better than I would like to admit.

So I am a loud and proud Instagramer of food pictures (and pictures of my dog) and here’s what I am going to do about it:

As part of my refocus for the upcoming portfolio review (58 days and counting) I am starting a new blog called Shoot What You Eat, launching in October. It will be a blog about food, food culture and food photography. I’ll share recipes for the perfect tortilla soup and best way to capture the Dragon Roll at your favorite sushi place for your Facebook update. I’ll share thoughts and images of different places I go and the food I discover.

Not only with I not make excuses or apologize for shooting (and posting) what I eat, I am going to glorify it. No matter what your background or culture is, food is something that brings people together and, for most people, good food is one of the great joys in life. As many people have said before me, food is love.

So follow me on Instagram (doncrossland) if you love food (and dogs). And if you post pictures of food and travel or, better yet, food during your travels I’ll probably find you and follow you. Food posters, unite!
